Bluff Prairie Restoration

Photo The Department of Land Management, in partnership with Ecker's Apple Farm, hosted Trempealeau County's first Bluff Prairie Meeting on June 21, 2017.

The event included informational presentations from local Resource Specialists, focusing on the importance of preserving a globally rare habitat that is home to butterflies, birds and diverse plant life.

Bluff prairies only occur in the Driftless region, and even in the Driftless region, the prairies are increasingly rare. There is less than a tenth of 1 percent of the original prairies remaining and fewer than 100 remaining globally. With the potential for these rare prairies to be restored in Trempealeau County, the Department of Land Management desires to work with landowners around the county to protect and preserve such a rare jewel found locally.

The first event was extremely successful, with 80 attendees who were able to enjoy a beautiful summer solstice evening at Ecker's Apple Farm.

The hike of their restored prairie was led by regional scientists and experts in the field. For more information on bluff prairies or cost-sharing opportunities to restore them on your own land, please contact the Department of Land Management, or see the compiled list of Resource Specialists for their contact information.
