To assist you in acquiring permits to build your new home the following checklist has been developed. If you can answer "Yes" to the following questions, you have the necessary county permits required to begin construction of your home:

Do you have a copy of your registered deed?

A registered deed is required to be submitted to the Zoning Department before your permits will be issued. The registered deed is the document that shows ownership of the property. If you are creating a new parcel (through a land division) Click Here to see if a Certified Survey Map is required.

Do you have approval for your driveway?

Depending on the type of public road (town, county or state highway) your driveway enters on to a permit may be required. If your driveway enters on to a Town Road contact your Town Chairman. If your driveway enters on to a County Road Contact the County Highway Department at 877-538-4799. If your driveway enters onto a State Highway contact the Wisconsin Department of Transportation at 608-785-9967.

Do you have your sanitary soil test, site evaluation and sanitary permit submitted to the Zoning Department?

Prior to issuing zoning, building or manufactured home permits for a residence a sanitary permit must be approved for the property. The first step in acquiring a sanitary permit is having a soil test and site evaluation of the property completed. In order to achieve this you must contact a licensed soil tester. Click Here for a list of licensed soil testers. Once a soil test has been completed and approved for the site, contact a licensed plumber to obtain a sanitary permit. Click Here for a list of licensed plumbers. A licensed plumber must sign sanitary permit applications.

Have you contacted a well driller?

The Trempealeau County Zoning Department regulates the installation of private wells.  A well location permit is required prior to the installation of a new well, or the replacement of an existing well.  The well location permit fee is $30.00   Click here for a list of licensed well drillers.

Have you submitted your zoning, building or manufactured home permits to the Zoning Department?

Prior to any construction or earthmoving a zoning, building or manufactured home permit must be submitted to the Trempealeau County Zoning Department for approval. No construction or earthmoving may take place until you have received an approved zoning, building or manufactured home permit.

A manufactured home requires that a manufactured home permit be submitted.  Click here for a manufactured home permit.

Have you contacted your Township regarding your construction project?

A signature from the Town Chairman or Town Clerk is required on county building permits and manufactured home permits prior to the permits being submitted to the Zoning Department. Have you completed your Erosion Control Plan?

A completed Erosion Control Plan must be submitted to the Zoning Department and approved prior to any construction or earthmoving. Click Here for erosion control plan guidelines and application. Have you submitted your Uniform Number Permit application (address)?

A uniform number (address) is required for all new residences. A completed uniform number application must be submitted to the Zoning Department with zoning, building or manufactured home permits. Click here for a uniform number permit application.

Have you paid your permit fees?

Applications will not be processed unless the application fees accompany them. Fees for applications are located on each application in the upper right hand corner. There are no fees for an erosion control plan. Please make checks payable to the Trempealeau County Zoning Department.

Have you received your building, zoning or manufactured home permit from the Trempealeau County Zoning Department?

No construction or earthmoving may take place until you have received an approved zoning, building or manufactured home permit. By ordinance the Trempealeau County Zoning Department has 30 days to review permit applications from the date they are received. However the Zoning Department makes every effort to review and issue permits permit applications within 5 working days. You will be mailed your permits, which authorize construction and earthmoving to begin. Do not start construction or earthmoving until you have received your permits.
